Interview  by Phil Peretz, Indie Artists Alliance and iMuzic.com

How long have you been making music and how did you get started?
It all started when I was a club owner, I owned the most known hip-hop/rock live club in Greece where indie artists performed but also known artists, I started hosting Saturday nights as a fluke when the main MC didn’t show up! the crowd dug it and continued.. soon enough I was freestyling, I opened my second company called 2real and before I knew it was being asked to perform at major night clubs and events. After that I had to hit a studio and take it to another level even though I just wanted to host, I started to rap!

I know that your genre is R&B and Hip Hop, but how else can you describe yourself?
That’s easy…funny, witty, sexy, real !

Who is your inspiration?
I have been inspired by 2pac, Public Enemy, Jay Z but basically when it comes to stage performance I was mostly influence by Eddie Murphy, I’ve always been a fan of stand up comedy and practiced it.. that’s what gives me confidence on stage.

Your last song was Baby Dance, what inspired you to write that?
That song was inspired by imagination, I basically like re-living situations, imagine them as movies and make them into songs, you can say it was inspired by a dream girl scenario.

What new things do you have going on?
I just released 2 singles, releasing more including an album. Fila me (Kiss me) just made the Greek summer hit of 2010 so basically I’m on tour around Greece .. hosting shows and presenting events as a celebrity guest, things are picking up. I’m always working on new things and ideas, music is my life and Im open minded to various ventures, I’m also open for ideas.

Where can people learn more about you? What’s your web site?
You can try googling “mcpauld” or visit http://www.mcpauld.com, also 2real.org should be up and running soon.

Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the fans?
Yeah .. fans are my major inspiration, I forgot to mention that before, every handshake every hug, every “wasup” makes me stronger and keeps me doing what I do, fans make the musicians, musicians don’t make the fans.

Webpage: http://www.masonreedmusic.com
Location: Tucson, AZ, USA
Description: You Can’t Come Back From Heaven EP — RELEASE DATE: 2/23/2010
Biography: Mason Reed is a truly gifted songwriter. There’s no other way to put it. When you listen to his music, you can hear that something special is happening. Even if you can’t quite put your finger on it, its happening. Reed’s new 5 song EP "You Can’t Come Back From Heaven" is evidence that the singer/songwriter genre has not been killed. Americana music hasn’t been fluffed over with soft computer generated travis-picking and pop punk vocals. Recorded over 5 days in Los Angeles, CA and produced by Reed and Engineer Steve Holroyd (Ryan Adams/Tom Petty) The new album includes an appearance from Bass master Jorgen Carlsson of the band Gov’t Mule. If there’s one thing that can be said about Mason Reed, he has a monster work ethic. Reed and band are currently booking a self proclaimed "never ending tour" to support the new EP that will be released Feb 23rd, 2010. "I’m a work horse for sure," says Reed "Road, studio, road, studio, this the schedule we have and I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even the bad days are ok" It comes as no surprise that the first track lyrically reaffirms Reeds love of the troubadour lifestyle "I don’t love nobody, but I love that road" The record reflects themes of lost loves and found purpose. It’s a gritty bare knuckled representation of giving it all up to face your dreams and demons head on. More information can be found @ www.masonreedmusic.com —

SINK TO SEE: Straightforward Rock ’n’ Roll

By David Tobin 10.26.09

It’s the simplicity in music that makes it the most effective. When you’re dealing with rock, it needs to be raw and unfiltered. It needs to have some passion and a hook. When you start to add more to the equation, it strays away from its roots and no longer can be classified as just rock and roll.

Sink to See has done this once again. Their first album had the makings of something special, but it wasn’t until their latest, 2012, that the band came together to bring something solid to the music world.

Dony West, lead guitarist, had similar feelings about the new release: “We grew in the process of this record. 2012 is about the end of the world, and we took home that feeling and put it into music. This album is more introspective. We thought about the lyrics a lot more.”

The new songs offer insight to daily life and mimic the band’s own will to get through to the masses on their own terms. Focusing on their online presence and ways to actually interact with their fans is a big part of what has garnered the growing buzz around this act.

Bassist Shawn Bathe put the online campaign into focus: “You reach listeners on a first person basis now, that’s very valuable. We exist virtually 24/7 when, in actuality, we are only interacting ‘live’ a small portion of time.”

West adds, “Online presence is the face of your band these days, you don’t have to tour Russia to reach your fans.”

Not only is this band using the Internet in more ways than conventionally thought, they are also being heard in commercials for Nissan and TV shows on networks like Bravo.

Darynyck – The Sasquatch Sessions

Darynyck

Webpage: http://www.facebook.com/darynyck
Location: Columbus, OH, USA
Description: Darynyck plays musical sounds which may result in foot-tapping and/or uncontrollable humming. Darynyck writes simple, catchy, pop-oriented songs about life, love, and YOU. Darynyck are your best friends.
Biography: Emerging from suburban Toledo, OH, DARYNYCK has been bobbing heads and twitching legs of friends, strangers & local rockshow patrons since 2005 with their uniquely straightforward lo-fi-indie-pop-folk sound. The group is comprised of vocalists and multi-instrumentalists DARYN & NYCK. Their goal is to write memorable tunes with simple melodies that will persist in the listener’s head, thanks to DARYN’s attention to song arrangement and perfectionist attitude, and NYCK’S innate ability to harmonize and create exceptionally original melodies.

With influences ranging from the 1950s to the 2000s — from the Beatles/Buddy Holly/Lovin’ Spoonful to Elliot Smith/Guster/Coldplay/Fountains of Wayne/Green Day — DARYNYCK’S sound can certainly be classified as “pop”. They have no intention of blowing minds with complex guitar riffs and overly profound lyrics, and believe in a traditional songwriting approach: simple chords, memorable melodies, and a solid percussive beat. DARYNYCK’s songs, with catchy hooks and easy-to-identify-with lyrics, parallel the boys’ relaxed yet contemplative attitudes toward life, love and everyday occurrences. Their lo-fi, DIY recording process emphasizes songwriting over flashy, expensive equipment. However, DARYN is meticulous when it comes to song production, spending hours mixing, layering tracks, and experimenting with different sounds & effects. This combination of simple songwriting yet complex production results in a pleasantly uncommon listening experience.

For the live show, DARYN & NYCK share lead vocal duties while swapping guitar & drums throughout the set. A DARYNYCK performance may include any of the following: acoustic & electric guitars, bass, drums, handheld percussion, harmonica, trumpet, recorder, keyboard, and/or electronic drum loops. Their acoustic shows include various percussion instruments: djembe, water jug, tambourine, egg shakers & maracas. NYCK’S whistling solos and falsetto harmonies add to the unique–yet strangely familiar–well-arranged and raw DARYNYCK sound.

When DARYN & NYCK first met as 2nd grade soccer teammates, they had no idea that their shared interests in He-Man and Sasquatch would eventually become shared interests in singing and songwriting. Fast-forward to high school, when DARYN’s fledgling guitar skills and NYCK’s band & choir background led to a few homemade recordings and an unofficial musical partnership. Two college educations, a dismantled cover band, and countless temp jobs later, DARYN and NYCK began to write and record again in late 2005, and their musical team was officially formed. They made a name for themselves in their hometown local Toledo music scene throughout 2006, and 2007 brought them to Columbus where they quickly began playing local clubs and becoming entrenched in the promising local music scene.

DARYNYCK’s official debut, “The Sasquatch Sessions: 2001-2005, Vols. I & II”, is an 18-song, double-disc compilation of some of their earliest songs. Originally released in April 2008, it was re-released in April 2009 with updated artwork and bonus track. “The Sasquatch Sessions” has received universally positive press from varying local and online press.

Biography

From his native New Zealand to his newly adopted home in New York, Simon Spire has long been on a path towards fully capturing his artistic vision. Now, with ALL or NOTHING, the Auckland-born singer/songwriter has crafted a powerful and evocative debut album, firmly establishing him among today’s best new artists. Songs such as Dying Daily and the buoyant Inside Out are made indelible via Spire’s engaging vocals, masterful guitar styling, and his impressively crafted arrangements, highlighting a lyrical gift that is simultaneously deeply personal and wholly universal. Moving through straight-up rock ‘n’ roll to energetic powerpop to lush balladry, the album leads the listener through this new artist’s striking impressions of life and uncompromising relationship to it, one that could aptly be described as ALL or NOTHING.

“A friend asked me what the record was about,” he says. “After reflecting on it, I realized that what really sums it up for me is transformation. The songs are about moving through experiences and expanding into something new. A song such as Hiding So Long deals with that sometimes elusive connection to a place of personal authenticity, while Alive feels like a celebration of having sailed beyond the horizon of one’s known world.”

Spire played piano while growing up in Auckland, but didn’t discover his true passion until hearing Nirvana at the age of 13. He immediately made the musical shift from the eighty-eight keys to the six-string. Now “completely guitar-obsessed,” Simon fell in thrall to axe masters like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, their “intensity” touching something deep in the young musician’s core. Spire spent his high school years exploring the guitar, serving in a variety of outfits ranging from cover bands, original rock groups, and of course, the school jazz band.

In time, Spire began to write his own material. Inspired by such confessional tunesmiths as Alanis Morissette, John Mayer, and Neil Diamond, Simon put pen to paper, embarking on a new chapter in his musical journey. Spire soon teamed up with a drummer/sound engineer friend and made his first demo, learning the intricacies of vocal performance, musical arrangement, and recording techniques in the process. Still, he hadn’t yet realized that music was going to be his life’s work. He attended the University of Auckland, receiving senior prizes in both finance and economics. “It was a direction I was seriously considering,” he says, “but eventually I realized it wasn’t what I was looking for.”

After graduation, Simon understood that his creative drive left him little option but to pursue music as a full-time vocation. His father, then living in Los Angeles, proved his support for his son’s occupational decision when, by chance, he made the acquaintance of Lenedra Carroll, an accomplished artist and businesswoman known for her work developing and managing the career of the multi-platinum artist, Jewel.

Carroll agreed to give Spire’s demo a listen, and Simon was soon on a flight out of New Zealand to meet with her. Upon landing in Los Angeles, he was stunned to find Carroll and his dad waiting for him at the arrivals area. “It was all so sudden,” he says. “We made our way to the LAX parking garage, sat in the car and listened to my demo. I was incredibly tense, sitting in the back seat and not knowing how the music was coming across, but in the end, Lenedra agreed to give me some guidance and advice. It was such a breakthrough; I couldn’t believe that someone in the industry who really knew what she was doing would actually be interested in me.”

In time, Carroll would become a mentor to Simon after selecting him as the first recipient of her Artist Advance project’s ‘Main Stage Award,’ an artist apprenticeship program that provides new artists with the many kinds of resources needed for the further development of their talent and careers. Her wise counsel included connecting the young songwriter with producer/arranger Joe Mardin, known for his work with such diverse artists as Jewel, Raul Midon, and Queen Latifah. When Spire returned home to Auckland, he and Mardin continued their musical exchange via e-mail. “It was cool to get an objective opinion on where my songs were,” Spire says. “Joe saw something in my music that he liked and pushed me to develop as a writer.”

Spire returned to Los Angeles in order to further his musical career. The next year he headed north to Orcas Island, the largest of Washington’s San Juan Islands, to record a demo with the help of producer Jim Bredouw. Simon indulged himself in the many options a modern studio has to offer, providing further fuel for his expanding musical vision. It wasn’t long before Spire’s enhanced musical understanding called out for the next step: a full-scale album. Carroll suggested her protégé team with producer Ralf Illenberger at his studio in Sedona, Arizona. Illenberger, a Grammy-nominated guitarist/composer hailed for his rich soundscapes, proved an ideal foil for Spire, the perfect producer to help the young artist achieve his ambition.

“Initially, Ralf seemed like an unusual choice, given the range of music he’s covered,” Spire says. “But it was this diversity that I think made for a great pairing – he understood both the instrumental emphasis that was important to me, as well as the delivery of the songs themselves. He reminds me of producers like Brian Eno and Patrick Leonard—producers with a wide range of musical interest, and musicians in their own right, whose personal musical arenas are deep and varied soundscapes. More importantly, Ralf encouraged me to try things I may not have otherwise tried. I think we complemented each other well. As a team, we came up with something pretty cool.”

Accompanied by a cadre of AZ-based backing musicians, Spire was able to bring brightness and texture to songs like No More Words and You, You, You. Melding styles and sonic approaches, ALL or NOTHING is alive with inventive musicality, irresistible melodies and intimate lyricism, all ten tracks having been written by Spire himself. From the punchy More Or Less, to the closing title track, the album is animated and upbeat, not unlike its creator. “It’s everything I wanted it to be,” Simon says. “It has the guts and the drive I was aiming for, it has the color and variety.”

With recording completed on ALL or NOTHING, it wasn’t long before Spire’s traveling jones took hold of him once more. As 2007 came to a close, the young tunesmith packed his things and left LA for the bright lights of New York City. “The more I visited here, the more I fell in love with it,” the brand-new Big Apple resident enthuses. “The music scene, the vibrancy of the whole city, it’s so alive. It feels so strongly at the center of it all. Plus, I’ve never lived in a place where it snows.”

Spire is now poised to set out on the next leg of his artistic expedition. ALL or NOTHING captures a gifted new artist exploring his craft and his soul in an effort to reach a place that’s both true and transcendent. Where Simon Spire’s path will lead him is as yet undetermined, but as his songs make evident, the journey is the destination.

“Making music has always opened new doors and challenged me to explore unanticipated directions,” Spire says. “Who knows what doors will open next?”

"Yesno" by Juna – Post-Rock Genre CD
imuzic | April 15, 2010 | 3:33 pm | Music | No comments

Sophisticated instrumentation and songcraft that will please fans of Radiohead combined with existentialist lyrics reminiscent of early Leonard Cohen.

Juna is the solo project of John Morgan, fueled by the breakup of the band Simple Machines, an underground three piece from Morgantown, WV.

“Yesno”, Juna’s debut release, was written by Morgan over six years between 2001 and 2006, and took one year to record afterwards. The process was hindered by a noisy living room recording space shared with former Simple Machines members. Reluctantly dubbed a concept record , “Yesno” is comprised of songs that are meant to cohere musically and lyrically. The lyrics spin a tragic narrative that represent the eternal strife that accompanies the human condition. The title represents the synthesis or joining

of two opposing forces, that create a third, different force: Yes + No = “Yesno.”

At the heart of the album’s instrumentation is the Rhodes Piano, a cult-status instrument that is not widely used as a primary element in composition. A wide variety of other instruments embellish the mix including drums, shakers, synth, electric guitar, electric bass, cello, autoharp, bells and ample vocal harmonies.
